A Strategic Decision for the Economy and National Security
Each year, nearly 60,000 containers transit through Haiti
The recent decision by the Haitian government to ban the transit of goods destined for the country via the Dominican Republic marks a decisive turning point in the fight against smuggling and insecurity. This measure, initiated by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, is a revolutionary and responsible decision, praised by many for its positive impact on strengthening the state’s structures. As a people who have long suffered from the ravages of illegal trafficking, this decision is a necessary step to regain control of our borders and protect our interests.
Each year, nearly 60,000 containers transit through Haiti, but last year, about 30,000 of them passed through Santo Domingo. This massive diversion deprives Haitian ports of their natural role, leading to a significant economic shortfall for the nation. Worse still, this modus operandi favors smuggling networks, orchestrated notably by a certain « Xavier. » Xavier, a Haitian who married a Dominican, heads a vast smuggling network that escapes all state control. Through this channel, goods in transit freely pass, creating an environment conducive to the introduction of arms, ammunition, and drugs into Haitian territory.
It is important to note that this government decision does not target Dominican products in any way. By blocking the uncontrolled flow of goods in transit, the government aims to curb the actions of smugglers and reduce the illegal trade of arms and ammunition that fuel violent gangs responsible for so much suffering in our communities. Additionally, this measure will help increase customs revenues by refocusing imports on Haitian ports, which remain fully open and operational.
Certainly, this decision will not be without challenges. It will require rigorous monitoring, increased regional coordination, and investments in the national port infrastructure. However, the potential benefits are clear: a reduction in smuggling, improved border security, and increased resources available for economic development.
By protecting our borders and asserting our sovereignty, we remind ourselves that Haiti’s interests are non-negotiable. This strategic choice marks a significant advance toward a fairer economy and a safer society. Now it is up to all the stakeholders, government, institutions, and citizens ,to support this measure and build a better future.
